There's a lot to try and understand. Use these videos to help revise Series and Parallel circuits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OukZ4CCjrHI
Remember: motors and generators work on the same principle, it's just that a motor is a generator in reverse! Think of a fan and a wind turbine. One uses electricity to produce movement (a fan) and the other uses movement to produce electricity (wind turbine). Use this link from Bitesize to play with a motor: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_ocr_21c/electric_circuits/electricmotorsrev2.shtml. Or, even better, use the generator from this simulation: http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/faraday
